#WeHateRunning but we did it!!

On the 20th June I received an email from Liane John in Lloyds bank offering us a place in the Corporate Relay for the Cardiff Half Marathon - we didn't really have a running group - we had people that ran and people that didn't!  After a chat with some of the members we thought: Sod it lets do it and see what happens.

It was at that point that we formed #WeHateRunning Beginners Run Club - we had a clear goal in mind, and a few fun run 5ks' on the way to it.  Now not only were the initial runners pretty much bribed into attending but also me, as the 'instructor'!!  I am used to and enjoy a good 'smash & grab' workout - 30/40minutes of hard work and sweatiness followed by a quick exit - so me and running had a pretty hate:hate relationship.

After roping in a member who ran regular marathons for ‘FUN’ to help with the group, we were off.

First session arrived and everyone was a bit nervous and not really sure what to expect.  Delyth our marathon fun runner led us out of the car park and into the big wide world of road running.  We got to the end of the street and stopped for breather…!

Over the weeks that followed we focused on running for time rather than distance – which worked well and kept moral up as we could all arrive back at the gym at the same time whether we ran 5k or 2k.  We ran a few 5k fun runs and took advantage of the free Cardiff Park Run when we could on Saturday mornings.

By the time the Half Marathon came around, everyone was excited and nervous, each relay runner was assigned a buddy runner who had also been training within the group. 

On the day of the Half we met at the beautiful building that is the Welsh College of Music and Drama, and each of the runners were taken to their relevant change over points and of they went!

Louise our first leg runner decided fairly early on that she wanted to try and run the whole of the Half Marathon – and let me tell you – she did!  Our second leg runner, Linsey, decided she wanted to run her leg and continue to run the last leg too – she did!  And our final leg runner, Matt, hit a huge PB of knocking 3 minutes from his previous 5k time…..!

Suffice to say everyone needed a week off after all the effort and excitement leading up to the race….

After a great time training to lead up to the event it was the icing on the cake to smash our target of raising £500 for The Alzeimers Society and end up raising over £600 that went straight to them through our Justgiving page.

Well done to everyone that ran and trained – a special thank you to the buddy runners, Delyth, Sarah and Georgina, who helped our relay runners over the line and through each of their relay legs and further.

We have now confirmed a schedule for races we want to train for ready for the end of 2014 and 2015…

Around 8 weeks ago I was talked into joining the #‎wehaterunning group and could just about manage to run for 5mins without stopping and gasping for air !! Yesterday I completed the half marathon.....ok so I had a few walks on the way...but I did it....just goes to show that with the right training and motivation you can achieve anything!!! Thanks again Elite Fitness and the rest of the #wehaterunning group, couldn't have done it without you

 p.s I still hate running !!! x
